Statement of Inclusivity
A Covenant of True Belonging

Rodef Sholom is committed to creating and sustaining a culture of belonging that is built on each member taking personal responsibility to extend deep welcome to all. We promote a safe and inclusive environment upheld by the Jewish values of kavod (honor) and kedushah (holiness). We aim to speak and behave in a manner that honors the spark of divinity in every person (B’tzelem Elohim). We take action (lo ta’amod al dam re’echa) when those in our community and in the world are being harmed. As a congregation we affirm that the safety and healing of every member of the community is our highest priority, and are especially mindful of historically marginalized and oppressed communities that have been discriminated against based on race, gender, sexuality, national origin, ability, and faith practice. The intention of this covenant is for each of us to declare and inspire action consistent with our congregation’s values.
- We commit to creating a culture of belonging in which each person feels seen, heard, valued and encouraged to bring and express their whole selves.
- We hold true to a system of values rooted in integrity and love, honor and kindness.
- We do not tolerate racism or prejudice of any kind.
- We deeply value the diversity of race, ethnicity, gender identity, age, faith, sexuality, socio-economics, and ability in our community.
- We commit to having courageous conversations about identity, culture, prejudice, and intolerance and to examining unconscious bias within ourselves.
- We recognize that a core strength of our community is our pluralism of Jewish practice, belief, and diverse perspectives.
- We honor our interfaith families and believe that religious diversity enhances our wisdom and enriches our community.
- We commit to using language that embraces each member of our community.
- We take responsibility for the impact of words, actions, and behaviors that cause harm and commit to practices of teshuvah (apology, forgiveness, and reconciliation) and accountability.
- We aspire to a social justice practice based in a philosophy of mutual accompaniment and solidarity.
Our community continues to grow in diversity both within Rodef Sholom and across the country. Our Statement of Inclusivity is connected to the Jewish Federation's culture of belonging work.
