This has been a heartbreaking year for us all, and the war in Israel and Gaza continues to weigh heavy on our minds and hearts this Elul. As we turn the page to a new year, many of us yearn for a safe place to explore our complex and varied responses to the multi-faceted conflicts taking place in Israel/Palestine, the broader Middle East, and here in the United States.
In this three-session writing class, we will explore themes of home and heritage, personal history, and cultural identity in an open-hearted, non-judgmental setting. With an eye toward the past, present, and future, we will examine how Israeli culture, traditions, and spirit have influenced our beliefs and identity. Together, we will delve into questions of peoplehood, home, safety, fear, refuge, and dissent. This will be a space to explore new questions that may have emerged for you in your relationship to Israel, Jewish peoplehood, and being Jewish in the United States since October 7th. In the spirit of Elul, it will also be a space to explore ruptures we have experienced in relationships since October 7th and the potential to use this season for deeper repair, empathy, and understanding. We will learn the basics of memoir writing and deepen our understanding of the power of personal narrative, with an opportunity to share our unique perspectives.
