Good Morning All,

We thrilled to write you all and share that Judge Valerie Burch has granted Hugo Mejia a bond hearing for November 21st at 9am.  We are so grateful for this long-awaited, hard-fought news.

Actions leading up to November 21st:  Now that we have the date of Hugo's bond hearing, we are asking that if you still have not been able to write a letter or sign the petition, that you please do so, and encourage your community to do the same.  For now, our three action items are still the same, and as we gain more clarity on how we can show up to support Hugo on November 21st, we will share with this community.

1) Write a letter of support for Hugo Mejia that will be delivered to Judge Burch prior to the hearing:

It is critical that Judge Burch sees and understands this community's support for Hugo.  If you wrote a letter of support for Hugo many months ago, please update it and/or write another.  Previously our letters were gathered and given to ICE.  These new letters will be delivered to Judge Burch who will read and use them to inform her decision on whether to return him to his family and to our community on bond.  If you have since met Hugo and/or his family, or as you have learned more about them, please share those details in your letter.  As you shape your letter, you can look to a piece Hugo recently co-wrote with Cindy Knoebel, telling the story of his arrest and detainment.  Also note that if Hugo is released he plans to continue to his volunteer work at the schools, in our community, and also plans to continue his classes at the Canal Alliance.  If you would like, we have attached a template you can use for your personal letter.  Please note that the template also asks people include proof of lawful status or print on company letterhead. If that is not feasible we can still include the letters, but the judge will give letters more weight if we have proof the letter writer has lawful status here. Once your letter is complete, please mail it directly to his attorney:

    Centro Legal de la Raza

At this time, letters should be received by Wednesday, November 15th

2) Sign this petition

3) Share both the petition and letter writing campaign widely with your networks.

Again, as we get more information about how we can best support Hugo and his family on the day of the bond hearing, we will pass it along.  For now, please continue to write and encourage others to do so as well.  Many thanks to this tremendous community.

In solidarity,

The Venetia Valley Family Center
